Happy Memorial Day

Hey everybody - have a great Memorial Day weekend, smile and be safe. I also want to extend a special thank you to all those soldiers who listen to Shakedown Stream overseas.

Good Evening, Morning, Afternoon, etc.. JerBear,
Just sending you an endless thank-you from the sunshine daydream beaches of the land of the rising sun, Okinawa, Japan. I'm stationed here as a Marine preparing to deploy to Afghanistan and just before the second set of the Avalon Ballroom, 10/12/68, you mentioned a young man jamming in Iraq. Keep 'em rolling friend, I'll be carrying these golden shows with me from Okinawa->Hawaii->California->Afghanistan in a time span of about 2 months; to culminate in the big sandbox for a hefty time period. I'll be fightin' tooth and nail for internet access to the Stream. I figure you'll be able to add a few locals to your global pin cushion.
Let me tell you though, my heartstrings soar with the power surging from this primeval Dead. Some of my favorite early jams were ghostly and violently birthed through Cryptical Envelopment->Drums->That's it for the other one->Cryptical Envelopment->Drums->Jam->Feedback. This show has been stomping and flitting through my ear drums in a most glorious manner, and most righteously taking the place beside a coveted Fillmore West '69.
The 5 reasons why I love the Dead:
1.) People reaching to you, JerBear, through the Dead for comfort and solace
2.) You and the music providing love in due course
3.) My Brother and I understanding each other across oceans through sound
4.) All that is yet to come
5.) Real life magic
Can't thank you enough Man. Long hours, longer jams, still floating. shall we go?

Streaming the Dead in Iraq

I enjoy receiving emails from the listeners of Shakedown Stream. Emails from Streamers in different countries around the globe are especially fun. It is very touching when they come from places I least expect. For example...

"JER BEAR,
JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW IM LISTENING TO YOUR SHOW ALL THE WAY OUT HERE IN IRAQ, I BET THAT'S A FIRST! I DO MY BEST TO GET THE SHOW WHENEVER I HAVE ACCESS TO AN INTERNET SIGNAL LONG ENOUGH TO DOWNLOAD IT. MY FAVORITE DEAD TUNES ARE ALWAYS CHANGING, RIGHT NOW THEY ARE: ALHEA, GDTRFB, WEST LA FADE AWAY, BIG BOSS MAN, SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD, ONE MORE SATURDAY NIGHT, MORNING DEW, BLACK PETER, I'VE BEEN ALL AROUND THIS WORLD, AND
> COMES A TIME. I USUALLY LISTEN TO THE SHOW WHEN I'VE GOT SOME DOWN TIME OUT HERE AND TOTALLY IMMERSE MYSELF IN THE MUSIC, CLEAR MY MIND OF MY CURRENT SURROUNDINGS, AND IMAGINE WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE IT MUST HAVE BEEN TO HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN AT THE SHOW! THE GRATEFUL DEAD ARE A PURE EXAMPLE A GREAT AMERICAN BAND. THE BOYS CREATED SOMETHING THAT COULD NEVER BE DUPLICATED AND WILL LIVE ON FOREVER.
KEEP ON DOIN WHAT YA DO JER BEAR!!!
 GRADY J."

The featured show for the last week of May will take us to the Univ. of Calif @ Santa Barbara 5/25/74.
It was 36 years ago.

The review of this show in Deadbase says "This simply has to be one of the greatest Dead jams of all time. The Truckin' > Let it Grow jam is so inspired, so utterly breathtaking as to defy description. It crackles with the blazing intensity of a thousand suns. The Grateful Dead at the peak of their powers." (Gary Ross)

It shall be transcendent.

Episode #126

The response for this week's featured show from 1968 has been very positive. For example, Mike from Rhode Island said "...I wanted you to know that the show you played this week from 68 was probably some of the most intense music I have ever heard from any band never mind that it was the grateful dead. HOLY SHIT bro...it literally blew my mind and now I'm back on a 68 and 69 dead kick."
I agree - the Primal Dead stuff from the 60s is a whole different type of Dead and it always brings me back - all the way back. (Click image)
  • The Grateful Dead continue connection to New York City - Symposium.
  • Bobby & Phil and Furthur will be at the Gathering of the Vibes on July 30th.
  • Billy K and Mickey w/ Rhythym Devils and Donna G as well as DSO and Jay Lane with Primus will all be at Gathering of the Vibes

New Dead Songs for Rock Band

On May 18th, there will be 6 new Grateful Dead songs available on Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 system. The following Dead songs >
Beat It On Down The Line
Cumberland Blues
Scarlet Begonias
Throwing Stones
Touch of Grey
U.S. Blues
will be available for download for $2 each or $9.99 for the six pack.
Maybe they will offer classic Grateful Dead song combinations like Scarlet> Fire or Estimated > Eyes or Help>Slip>Franklin's. Now that would be something.

Primal Dead

The featured show  on Shakedown Stream this week will be Primal Dead - Avalon Ballroom, SF, CA 10/12/68.
It is one Dick Latvala's  (Grateful Dead Archivist) favorites and he dubbed it "Primal Dead." I have been hearing many Streamers asking for  a deep, groovy, cosmic, true blue trippy Dead show.

It is a short show so expect some extra Dead delights.

Episode #125 & Bobby in Boston

This week's Shakedown Stream was pretty damn good. That may be because the featured show was from Rotterdam (click image for setlist)- a city in The Netherlands where dams are necessary and everywhere. Some Streamers said that this show had the longest Dark Star, but I am not so sure that is the case.

Even though Shakedown Stream continues to grow  throughout the US and internationally, we here on Martha's Vineyard - the island home of mvyradio.com - are always pleased when a member of the Grateful Dead comes to Boston. Bob Weir performed at a fundraiser for the Perkins School for the Blind (Boston Globe article) and then later on that day sang the national anthem for the Boston Celtics (youtube).

Keep on Streaming...

What I like ...

I like the Grateful Dead and listen often - Why? Yes, the type of music, the sound, the vibe, the boys' skills, the improv abilities, etc
-
But MAINLY - this goes right up front - they have a huge number of really good songs. I know they do a lot of covers, but they have written so so many fine songs with beautiful melodies and lyrics (thanks to Barlow and Hunter) which are played by such great musicians that gel so well collectively. Their strong and beautiful songs are what keep me
hooked.

Thanks for asking,
Jimmy

Dam the Dead

The best way to have a proper flashback is to play a show from the past on the same day of the month it was performed 38 years ago. Ergo, we will use Shakedown Stream technology to transport us to Rotterdam on May 11th 38 years ago.

Also, in another spin on the "The Intention Experiment" we can send positive intentions and/or prayers to the past and see if it'll have an effect.

Join me next week for a sweet european show from 1972.

Peace - Jer Bear

Research to the Dead

Love the podcast. I work as a researcher at a genomics company. We're trying to make it cheaper and faster for people to know what diseases they have, what bugs are in their water supply, and just generally democratize research. We all work some crazy long hours and the stream allows me to pippette away and enjoy my time in the lab. Your comments are fun to listen to and obviously the jams keep me going. Been listening to stream for over a year now and I love the long podcast! I'm only 26 so I never got to see the dead but love the music. I also just moved back to CA from mass and you allow me to remember the good parts of mass.
Anyway, top ten. And my list is obviously the best :)
Brown Eyed Woman
Liberty
Standing on the Moon
They Love Each Other
El Paso

Ramble on Rose
