Jerry Wasn't Happy ..., says drummer

You say you can't retire from music. All of the other remaining members of the Grateful Dead seem to feel the same way. Do you think if Jerry Garcia was still around that the Grateful Dead would still be touring?

No, I don't think so. I think that Jerry had gotten kind of bored with the Grateful Dead, and it was sort of like a marriage that had maybe gone on too long. And other people in the band wanted to start to express themselves in their bands and so forth and so on, that I'm pretty sure Jerry would've stopped playing in the Grateful Dead. I think a lot of it, I hate to say, was really a financial obligation. He needed to earn the money for some things and that's too bad. But it's hard. He was a true artist and I can tell you he wasn't really happy playing in the Grateful Dead at the end. I hate to say that. I know the audience is going to hear me say that and go, "Oh, that's not true," but if people really think about some of the shows that were there in the last year and some of the troubles that poor Jerry had, they know that I'm not BS'ing.

The Grateful Dead are famous for live concert performances - the best in rock n' roll. Their expertise in long extended jamming is magically unprecedented. They can pull off psychedelic parlor tricks that are unforgettable. A parlor trick is described by some as a magic trick for a large audience.
 "The phrase [parlor magic] is often used as a pejorative to imply that an effect under discussion is not suitable for professional performance." Also, many magicians consider the term "parlor" to be old fashioned and limiting, since this type of magic is often done in rooms much larger than the traditional parlor, or even outdoors. A better term for this branch of magic may be "platform," "club" or "cabaret."

The featured show this week has been randomly selected ... from my collection of Dead. I recently read John K's (formerly of Dark Star Orchestra and now lead guitar with Furthur) interview with Blair Jackson. In it he says that he was somewhat surprised that Bobby Weir told him that '89-90 was one of his favorite years and one of the best time periods for the Grateful Dead. Who would have a better opinion than him, right? Ergo, let's do an '89 show this week.

Jay Lane leaves Furthur to Go Primus

In a story first reported by Welcome to Now, Phil Lesh has confirmed that Jay Lane has left Furthur to re-join Primus. Phil took to the PhilZone message board this evening to explain the move…

“Over the past year, both Jill and I have come to know and love Jay for the great guy that he is. At the end of our tour he rode back on Bob’s bus and informed Bob that he had an opportunity to play drums with Primus. He and Bob discussed it, and they decided that the logical time to make the change would be after the birthday show. I only found out about this the day before the show; as their relationship goes back a long way, I told them both then that I support any decision they might make. I will miss Jay’s enthusiasm and ebullience; he’s a great guy to hang and play music with.”

Phil went on to answer a number of questions from fans in the thread and mentioned that both he and GD/Furthur band mate Bob Weir think that proceeding with one drummer – Sir Joe Russo – would be best. He also mentioned that we should keep our eyes on the Furthur website tomorrow for more information on the Furthur Festival. As for Jay Lane, he was an original member of Primus who left the band in 1989. He later joined up with the original Primus lineup in 1994 for an album released under the Sausage moniker. There’s been no official announcement from the Primus camp and there no confirmed Primus dates on the docket as of yet.

Grateful Dead: A Complete Road Trip

They keep coming at a consistent pace. Who says it is not a race? Anyway, this is twice that they (whoever they are) have released a Jerry Garcia Band CD release and a Road Trips at the same time. The significance is that they released a Road Trips of a whole Dead show (the 1968 RDTrips was complete as well). I love it, I love it, I love it. Do you think they are listening to us and doing complete shows? Here is what they say about it on their web page:

"The latest installment in our Road Trips series, now entering its third big year (and ninth release overall) is bound to become a favorite. Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1 is the complete show from December 28, 1979, part of the sparkling run that has already given us the excellent Dick’s Picks: Vol. 5 (from 12/26/79). You’ll recall that these year-end concerts, held at the Oakland Auditorium because Winterland had closed down for good the previous New Year’s Eve, were the first holiday shows featuring new keyboardist Brent Mydland, who joined the band in April 1979."

Grateful Dead: Streaming to the Pyramids

The Grateful Dead played three shows at the foot of the great Pyramids of Egypt. As we all know, the Grateful Dead were not an ordinary rock 'n roll band - they used music to transcend reality, to go on a vision quest, to experience something spiritual in a communal way. On the Europe '72 tour, Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh visited Stonehenge and were inspired to bring their music to an ancient place such as the Pyramids. Deadheads recognize that certain places have shamanistic powers that enhance musical experiences. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether it is the music that makes the place transformational or the actual location - Red Rocks - that possesses the magic, but, probably a little bit of both (even the Meadowlands in New Jersey can transcend and become mystical, especially if the band is firing on all pistons).

In our International Dead tour this month, we have travelled to London and Canada, and now we are going "a little but further than we've gone before." I have been waiting for the right time to feature the official Rhino release of the September 1978 Egypt show. I am also pleased to be giving away a free copy of this CD/DVD release of this amazing concert. Stamp your passport, saddle your camel, and open yourself to the ancient energies of the Great Pyramids.

Streaming with the Prez.

What a -kinda- long strange trip it's been !! Remember when President Obama was in a tough primary with Hillary Clinton and we were wondering what was going to happen? Then it looked like he was in a tight race against Sen. McCain when in October the economy went south? Yet, after a long strange trip, President Obama won, history was made and we witnessed his inspirational speech in Grant Park in Chicago. Now, in late August, the summer is almost over and President Obama is here on Martha's Vineyard.

We also shall never forget what the Grateful Dead did for President Obama. They got back together to play fundraisers for President Obama's campaign in San Francisco and Pennsylvania. Some would even say that President Obama's historic run for office brought The Dead back to life. After those successful events, Phil, Bobby, Mickey & Billy got back together for a spectacular Spring '09 Tour that still has us dancing in the streets.

I am not sure if President Obama came to vacation on Martha's Vineyard to play golf, swim, surf, eat fresh seafood or to hang with other big-time Democrats - who knows? There are a few of things that we can be sure of - it has been a long strange trip since his campaign began, he was elected the 44th President of the United States, and he is vacationing on the island. That is what people do - they come here to Martha's Vineyard with their familes to vacation, chill out, and relax. It is also a great place to stream one of the finest Grateful Dead shows in the galaxy - Shakedown Stream on mvyradio.com. Welcome Mr. President. How Much Further?

Many of us DeadHeads are very excited that Phil & Bobby are getting together for these three Further shows in September. And like most DeadHeads, we are all wondering what it means. Will they do more shows? If so, when? Will they tour in the winter and where will they tour? East Coast? Mid-West? Down South? Or just the Bay area? What? When? Where?

It's funny, isn't it? One thing we do know is that Bob Weir & RatDog are scheduled for shows on these dates:
October 2009
16, 17 - Philadelphia, PA - Tower Theatre
19, 20 - New York, NY - Grand Ballroom
22, 23, 24 - New York, NY - Beacon Theatre

As we can see, October is not a possibility, but maybe November or December or a New Year's show. Supposedly, however, John Kadelcik said on Facebook any further shows would happen next year. Who knows. This does leave next year a possibility Winter or Spring of 2010 as a possibility. Let's hope so.

Hey Jer -

Thanks for all the great music, I have a strange story on how I discovered you. I will give you the short version, I have been in the Navy for 17 years and have always been a huge Dead fan. Well before leaving on a 3 month trip, I discovered your podcast ... without even knowing, it was downloading to my IPOD. Well, one day under the water on mission, I was going through my music and found a great ray of sunshine and happiness ... was Shakedown Stream. It had downloaded probably about 20 of your shows ... I was totally stoked!!

Well since that trip, I have done many more underwater adventures and your show always comes along for the ride!! There are not many deadheads in the Navy that I know of so this experience doesn't move them as much as me!! Keep up the great work, and I will be relocating soon and will be finishing up my last few years of service in a new place ... Shakedown Stream will always be with me, just like the Grateful Dead!! The music makes me smile!!
