Message from Mickey Hart

I have always thought of life, the world at large, as music. This work is a physical representation of that notion. I have combined sonic images of the formation of our universe with the sounds drawn from musical instruments. It’s all about the vibrations that make up the infinite universe.

Enjoy Every Sandwich

The theme for Shakedown Stream this month has been "Grateful Dead Sandwiches." Many Dead shows have some wild jams that go into one song into another and so on ... it is fun. One month hardly reflects all the many shows that exemplify this phenomenon. I recently found this book that relates to our Shakedown scene and life.  " ... people’s levels of gratitude, since prior research has found that gratitude can have lasting effects on our health and happiness." Grateful Archive in Santa Cruz

It was nearly four years ago—April 24, 2008, to be precise—that the Grateful Dead announced at a press conference at the Fillmore in SF that the group was donating its archives and assorted memorabilia to the University of California at Santa Cruz and would reside in that sylvan campus’ McHenry Library.

Order a Dead Sandwich

Shakedown Stream offers up one more Dead Sandwich #4 for the month. Thank you everybody for all your kind words of encouragement and support for this theme. There are so many Grateful Dead shows to chose from that represent a juicy Dead Sandwich. I have tried to select shows that are not typical and/or predictable. Some people like Miracle Whip while others only use Helmann's, however, neither shall the two ever be mixed.

Join us again this week on http://www.mvyradio.com/ to wake up to find out what our featured Dead show will be this week.

Jerry Wasn't Happy ..., says drummer

You say you can't retire from music. All of the other remaining members of the Grateful Dead seem to feel the same way. Do you think if Jerry Garcia was still around that the Grateful Dead would still be touring?

No, I don't think so. I think that Jerry had gotten kind of bored with the Grateful Dead, and it was sort of like a marriage that had maybe gone on too long. And other people in the band wanted to start to express themselves in their bands and so forth and so on, that I'm pretty sure Jerry would've stopped playing in the Grateful Dead. I think a lot of it, I hate to say, was really a financial obligation. He needed to earn the money for some things and that's too bad. But it's hard. He was a true artist and I can tell you he wasn't really happy playing in the Grateful Dead at the end. I hate to say that. I know the audience is going to hear me say that and go, "Oh, that's not true," but if people really think about some of the shows that were there in the last year and some of the troubles that poor Jerry had, they know that I'm not BS'ing.

Dead Parlor Tricks

The Grateful Dead are famous for live concert performances - the best in rock n' roll. Their expertise in long extended jamming is magically unprecedented. They can pull off psychedelic parlor tricks that are unforgettable. A parlor trick is described by some as a magic trick for a large audience.
"The phrase [parlor magic] is often used as a pejorative to imply that an effect under discussion is not suitable for professional performance." Also, many magicians consider the term "parlor" to be old fashioned and limiting, since this type of magic is often done in rooms much larger than the traditional parlor, or even outdoors. A better term for this branch of magic may be "platform," "club" or "cabaret."

Join Shakedown Stream next week for another "Dead Sandwiches" - the Grateful Dead performing live magic for the whole family to enjoy. Click on mvyradio.com this Tuesday at 5pm.

Dead Sandwiches

January's Shakedown Stream will feature a different "Dead Sandwich" every week. What's a "Dead Sandwich"? It's not a kind grilled cheese, but a song into a jam, then jam into a different song, and a jam that leads back into the original tune. Last week we heard Playin' > into a bunch of other songs > Playin'. A psychedelic parlor trick - before you know it, they're back in the tune they started off with.

Who Knows?

What will happen on Shakedown Stream this week on mvyradio.com? A full-length featured Grateful Dead show, definitely. However, what show - Who Knows?

In his Nobel Laureate speech, Max Born said:
“    ...To measure space coordinates and instants of time, rigid measuring rods and clocks are required. On the other hand, to measure momenta and energies, devices are necessary with movable parts to absorb the impact of the test object and to indicate the size of its momentum. Paying regard to the fact that quantum mechanics is competent for dealing with the interaction of object and apparatus, it is seen that no arrangement is possible that will fulfill both requirements simultaneously...[1]
