Alpine Valley

Wow-
First off great theme- I remember bring this up when you feature the 1974 Montana show. Second love all the pigpen from the 12-12-6y show-great hard to handle and lovelight! Best uncle john's-> he was a friend of mine--- love that early rendition of the "dead theme song" or should that be Trucking-either way. Third- I did not catch the cold rain & snow from two weeks back when it was cold rain and snow here in Milwaukee. Furth-great wicked messenger-I've been to the oriental theater-god I wish it would have been for a jerry band show! They still do a crazy Saturday night midnight rocky horror picture show showing where people through real toast and spray water for the rain scenes. Lastly send out some vibes for Wisconsin-for a furthur show---Alpine Valley or summerfest- it worked for Pennsylvania
And-hey now- thanks for all your hard work and your creative style it keeps me smiling constantly in my car -which is where I can get the best uninterrupted shakedown stream time!
I forgot you simply must play the jam->china->MLBJ-rider from the dicks pick vol 12 -I must say it is the BEST china-rider ever!!! Maybe a pre-view of the 73-74 china->rider theme for a later date.

Dead News

As we get ready for the last installment of the China>Rider series on Shakedown Stream, I am pleased to report it has been well received. The theme has proven a little tricky because, believe it or not, finding the exact first China Cat Sunflower > (into) > I Know You Rider was more elusive than I expected. I am still not 100% sure that the very first China>Rider is from 9/30/69 show at that Cafe au Go-Go, NYC, however, I am reasonably confident. You know how the Truth goes, its' always changing and shifting on ya (wait, is that true?). Anyway, I enjoy "researching" different facts about the Grateful Dead's music and corresponding trivia. For the most part, I would portray myself more as one hack in the parking lot than a true Grateful Dead scholar, but whatever, that is what is cool about the Dead - we can all act as if. The thing that keeps my interest piqued is the continual and un-ending discovery about their music, ergo, it is still fresh for me.

China Cat Sunflower

China Cat Sunflower

Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.
Look for awhile at the China Cat Sunflower
proud-walking jingle in the midnight sun
Copper-dome Bodhi drip a silver kimono
like a crazy-quilt stargown
through a dream night wind
Krazy Kat peeking through a lace bandana
like a one-eyed Cheshire
like a diamond-eye Jack
A leaf of all colors plays
a golden string fiddle
to a double-e waterfall over my back
Comic book colors on a violin river
crying Leonardo words

from out a silk trombone
I rang a silent bell
beneath a shower of pearls
in the eagle wing palace
of the Queen Chinee

Bicycle Day

Albert Hofmann
Summary
Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of ZĂĽrich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to work for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids.

Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 ug of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab.

In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his quick and relatively painless death from a heart attack at the age of 102.

Please Donate Now

Every so often it is important for us to take a break from our orbital rotation around the Sun and recognize the role mvyradio plays in our lives. After this reflection, we realize we need to make a financial donation to mvyradio.com. Shakedown Stream's musical current is supported entirely on donations.

I am asking everybody to step up once again and show each of us just how much we like the show. We have a lot more ground to cover and a lot more traveling to complete -  we just got started! Here is how you make a donation Friends of MVY Radio.

Long Distance Runner

Hey Jer,
I have been wading in the stream for quite a while now, and still enjoy the cold clear invigorating stimulation of the music.

I am an ultramarathon runner, and often run three hours or more out in the wilderness of British Columbia.
I... am never lost, but do find myself "exploring" a fair bit...
Much like Jerry and the boys, they spent a lot of time "exploring".

Love the show, Man!

China/Rider !

Hey Jer,

Listening to this weeks stream on the 31st of march. I just

heard you announce the china/ rider theme for the month of

April and am utterly stoked. China/ rider is always on my "top

10" list", even though the list is ever-changing. Any show with

a china/rider is a show I want to hear.
I can't help but feel my previous email inspired Aprils theme,

which is cool because it's my birthday on the first of April.

That's right, April fools day and I've been playing the fool ever since.
Love and appreciate all     -     Sean from Pacifica

Dead Cupcakes

Life is to be enjoyed. Embrace it. Know that each of us are an expression of the Universe - we are what the Universe is saying - all the energies and intentions are manifesting through us so connect with it. More importantly, eat cupcakes in each and every action you take, every breath you breathe in and every breath you breathe out. Peace - Jer Bear

Furthur On Dead

It just seems to keep getting better. Furthur continues onward after their current tour ends in Boca, Florida. Phil & Bobby and the band go back home in June for 2 nights at Shoreline. Nothing like jamming in your backyard. "Hey, you kids get off of my lawn!" Remember, be careful out there, your life may depend on it.

Peace - JerBear
