Episode 104: Set List

Shakedown Stream for this week contained part 2 of my interview with Toni Brown (click on set list to enlarge). I have received some nice comments from streamers about this interview with Toni. She talks about how she avoided, as much as possible, the backstage scene at Grateful Dead concerts. We both agreed that it was too easy to get star-struck as fans of the Dead. She understood that she was a fan and it was necessary to maintain healthy boundaries. Also, for some reason, our IQs seem to drop when meet Jerry or Bobby face to face. Toni also shares some stories of Relix magazine.

Stream #104 opens with some live songs from various December shows along with a little Jerry. We also get a taste of Phil with The Black Crowes who recently played at The Fillmore in San Francisco; they played Dead.

The featured show is a short show from 1967 - "The Human Be-In." Then a few tunes from Jerry's Comeback show in '86. Because the featured show was so short, I threw in a 2nd set from Denver 1990. The last bit of the Stream closes with selected songs from December shows as well as one from Phil & Friends - Rosemary.

I Need a MVY Miracle Everyday

WMVY gave me a miracle this morning. I was in the dentist's chair earlier today having a root canal procedure when it happened. It was one of those classic dreaded dental scenes - pain, infection, and high-pitched drilling sounds. Apparently, it was taking longer than normal because of some complication (long story). My anxiety increased as my dentist reached the abscessed root area. Just at that moment, "I Need A Miracle" by the Grateful Dead came on the air (my dentist office plays mvyradio on their sound system).

That song, at that moment, in that dentist chair, playing on that radio station saved me this morning. Thank you, Laurel, for picking that Grateful Dead song.

Relix: The Book by Toni Brown

Many of us DeadHeads grew up with Relix magazine. It was an essential way to stay connected with the Grateful Dead scene. Believe it or not, we did not have Facebook to help us communicate with each other or Twitter for us to instantaneously get the set list from the show. As Toni Brown says in her interview on Shakedown Stream, Relix magazine was started as a place for tapers and Deadheads to connect with each other. It was started by fans - for the fans.

I would describe the new Relix Book as a coffee table book. It is jam packed with material from the first 30 years of Relix put together chronologically into one historical document - an Archivist's dream. I highly recommend this book as a Christmas gift for your favorite DeadHead friend, cousin, brother, Aunt, or ...whomever. Their memory banks will be jolted into a sweet flashback (all very legal of course). You can order the Relix: The Book here as well as Toni Brown and Ed Munson's new CD State of Mind. You can also listen to part 1 and part 2 of my interview with Toni on mvyradio.com's Shakedown Stream.

Jerry Garcia: Our Favorite Santa

Jer,
Jerry sure was (and is) a great door-greeter. Thanks for the reply, and thank YOU for the stream. It's a tasty treat every week, and it was easily my favorite discovery of 2009, as I began
listening in July. Shakedown Stream has kicked me right in the the seat of my well-worn pants of Grateful Dead enthusiasm. I'm listening to the music more regularly than I have in years, and your comments are always good for a thought or a laugh.

I told a bunch of my friends about your Peggy-O image a few weeks back -- of Jerry as a storyteller with butterflies coming out of his
beard while we all gather 'round and listen. We could all relate to that one - scary!!! I also really enjoyed the Oxford, Maine stream that you did. I was up there for those terrific shows, and the beautiful weather and cool scene helped to provide one of my best GD memories ever. The memories came flooding back when listening to that stream.

December is indeed the month of giving, but Shakedown Stream gives every
week of the gaul-dern year!!!! I can't thank you enough.

The Music Never Stops!!!!!
Thanks again,
--Sean

Fan Jams on Shakedown Stream

Starting next year, I am starting a new segment to our show called - Fan Jams. Anyone out there who plays Grateful Dead songs on a guitar, banjo, mandolin, keyboard or whatever ... I will play it on our Stream. Record it, burn it and mail it to me at mvyradio (see address below) on Martha's Vineyard.

Like me, I know many of you like to jam out your favorite Dead tunes solo or with friends, so record it and send it to me. I will even consider tunes that the Dead covered from other artists, or tunes that Phil & Friends or Bobby & RatDog play at their shows. If the recording quality meets mvyradio's standards, we'll stream it in Fan Jams. Shakedown Stream - by a fan, for the fans....

Mail your jams to:

Streaming All Around This World

Jer-

Hows it going? I appreciate the Stream. I am in the Navy so I load my I-POD up with your P-Casts and take them to sea. Nothing like listening to the dead while watching the sun set or rise over the ocean. I just got back from a brief excursion that took me to France, Estonia, Finland and Scotland and I am proud to say the Grateful Dead is alive around the world. Catching up on the Streams and I just finished the 10/27/2009 Stream that featured the Philly 10/20/89 show and that was one of the best streams to date. Thanks and keep the torch lit!

Busted Down on Bourbon Street

The Featured Show for this coming week will be 02/01/70, The Warehouse, New Orleans, LA with guitarist Peter Green. Mic Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac joins them on Turn On Your Lovelight. This show kinda represents a benefit concert - proceeds went to defray legal costs after the Dead's bust in New Orleans. As the line in Truckin' goes "Busted, down on bourbon street. Set up, like a bowling pin."

One of our loyal Streamers made an authentic request for some earlier Grateful Dead - "the good stuff."

*Also, I will play
part 1 of my interview with Toni Brown, the founder of Relix magazine and musical artist. I will be giving away copies of Toni Brown's & Ed Munson's new CD - State of Mind.

Streaming Down in New Orleans

I just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for the stream of August 4 2009.I live in New Orleans and lost over 200 show recordings collected over thirty years to Hurricane Katrina. My favorite tape was of a show I attended in the early 80's, Jerry solo acoustic at the Capital Theatre in Passaic New Jersey. Your Jerry tribute contained an acoustic show almost identical to

the tape I lost. Thanks to you and the Stream I am building my collection

again.
