Ecletic Dead

We have an interesting theme this month. This week's featured show from 1973, will show us the unique interplay of Dead tunes that are not typically played together. For example, we'll hear The Other One go into an Eyes of the World and other songs. This show from San Diego, CA is very sweet.

Also, starting this week, we will start the countdown of Me & My Uncles' from 1967 to the very last one.

Vote Vote Vote Vote, says Bob

Grateful Dead Guitarist Calling Fans Personally, Reminding Them To Vote

Most deadheads are used to listening to Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir live on stage, but a new get out the vote effort will give several fans the chance to hear him live in an entirely different way: on their phones., a nonpartisan group aimed at getting music fans involved in the Democratic process, announced Monday that a dozen musicians will place personal phone calls to their fans urging them to head to the polls.
“Rather than getting a recorded or live call from a politician saying vote for me,’ what we’re going to be dispensing are … live calls saying ‘vote for you,’”  Weir said during a conference call with reporters.
According to, those who receive the calls will be from the 25,000 young people who have signed up at concerts or online for the group’s “Pledge to Vote” campaign.
Country music legend Willie Nelson will be joining Weir, as will Adam Gardner from Guster, Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket and Jon Fishman from Phish.

Famed drummer and Grateful Dead co-founder Bill Kreutzmann, guitar master Papa Mali, legendary New Orleans bass man George Porter Jr. (The Meters, Funky Meters) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball), come together as 7 Walkers for their self-titled debut release, due out November 2, 2010 on Response Records. With nearly all of its songs co-penned by Papa Mali and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, 7 Walkers is an electrifying hybrid of classic Bay Area rock and New Orleans funk.

The highly anticipated release features a batch of brand-new originals, a guest performance by Willie Nelson on “King Cotton Blues,” and a few smokin’ instrumentals. A self-proclaimed “open love letter” to the city of New Orleans, the end result is a fiery and funky collection of tunes that quite brilliantly capture a unique collaboration between these very different musical shamans.

Everything Must Go - Len Dell'Amico

"Everything Must Go" is a new movie directed by Grateful Dead film-maker Len Dell'Amico. It is a weird new comedy about Mac who "after getting fired from his job and losing his girlfriend decides to go on a mission and find some drugs with his slacker friend Bobby. Their mission turns into a bizarre adventure that turns into a big screw up." I think this movie is friggin' funny and the perfect kind of humor for where we are in the crazy world right now.
Definitely check it out at

I had the good fortune to discuss Len's new movie recently. We also talked about the environment, windmills and Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Please join me this week for another long Grateful Dead stream and to hear parts of the interview on Shakedown Stream on Right on !! Jer Bear.

Oct 12th - Playin'

We are all Playing in the Band. The Grateful Dead performed Playing in the Band just over 500 times during their 30 year run. So when I find myself pondering what show to feature for Shakedown Stream this week, the options are overwhelming. There are so many. It is a song they played consistently throughout the years with many magical variances. Naturally, I think of the ’72 or ’74 long versions, but this week I ended up being ...drawn to May 1977.

The Dead played - what I call - sandwich Playing in the Bands’, particularly in ’77, but ’74 too. They would play a sweet Wharf Rat, The Wheel or even a Scarlet Begonias in the middle of a long Playin’ (like bookends). This week I picked the Palladium from the spring of ’77. This show contains a nice Playin’ sandwich with one of my favorite fillings. I hope you enjoy it.

I will also be streaming my recent interview with Jesse McReynolds, the famous country mandolin player from Jim & Jesse. Jesse's new CD is a Tribute to Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter songs: Songs of the Grateful Dead. I will also be giving away a limited number a free CDs of Jesse’s new Tribute album. He does a fabulous version of Black Muddy River, Deep Ellem Blues and Bird Song as well as others - all the songs are great. He also has a new song he did with Robert Hunter called "Day by Day". I think this is one of the best post Jerry projects since his passing in 1995.
