A Jerry Tribute Show: The Days Between

It has been 15 years since Jerry Garcia flew away. There will be lots of different celebrations throughout the land. Since 1997, I always do some type of Jerry show at this time of year. Yet, since it has been 15 years, I think it will be cool to do a 2 part Tribute show: August 3rd and August 10th. 

I am not sure what I will play as of yet, but there will definitely be lots of Jerry stuff. Definitely expect some material from The Jerry Garcia Band, Jerry acoustic, select Jerry tunes with the Grateful Dead, interviews with Jerry, bizarre Jerry solo stuff, obscure Jerry tunes, peaking experiences with Jerry, Jerry trivia and also some things before the Grateful Dead were ever Dead.

The Duke of Dead

The featured show: Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, 1978. This will be the 4th in a row from North Carolina this month and every show has been from a different city. You never know what you are going to get on Shakedown Stream - every week and every month it is something different, but always The Grateful Dead - the finest band in the land.

Blogging the Dead

A few months ago, The Atlantic Monthly  featured an article about how the Grateful Dead can be studied as a business model. Back in the old days, before Facebook, The Well, and Dead.net, when tickets were sold in tour books and shows were recorded and traded on Maxell UDXL tapes, the Grateful Dead's legendary followers created social networks that allowed the band to keep in touch with the fans in ways that no other rock and roll band did. Never ones to eschew technology, Deadheads embraced the digital revolution and continue to flow with the changes. The unconventional methods of the Grateful Dead's business are the focus of a new book, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead by David Meerman Scott and Brian Halligan. This summer the authors will follow Furthur and The Rhythm Devils on tour to promote the book, and in keeping with the spirit of digital innovation that has been embraced by Deadheads, they will create marketing webinars with Bill Walton, the tallest Deadhead in the Universe. Episode 134 - North Carolina

 

The set list to the right (click to enlarge) is in my hand writing and recorded in a spiral notebook.  Deadheads have been obsessively writing down set lists since the dawn of the Dead. My earliest memory is watching some guy with his lighter in one hand and pen in the other intensely recording the songs as the band played on.  I studied him the whole night.  At times, he talked out loud with effusive joy while announcing things like the significance of the boys' jamming into "Spoonful" out of "Truckin". Even though this guy appeared bizarre to the normal world,  I started following suit when I was 15 or 16 years old. I still do it, but now it is with Shakedown Stream. Many of us Deadheads still engage in this endeavor much the same way a birdwatcher records their sightings with date, time, location, accuracy and Latin name of the different birds they see.

"Mountains Of The Moon" - Playboy After Dark

Yes, this is Jerry Garcia in a poncho playing guitar on a Hugh Hefner TV show from the 60s. There are various stories about this gig. One is that the boys dosed the other guests including Hugh with LSD. The other is that     the electronic equipment and the speakers on the stage behind the band are totally fake - they are props. I am not even sure if they are really performing this tune or lip synching it. Nonetheless, I find this stuff wicked interesting because it gives us a glimpse of american TV from the 60s as well as rare video coverage of a much younger Jerry Garcia. 

Justin Timberlake a DeadHead?

It is hard to know what to think. I do not know the guy and I never saw him at a show dancing with the spinners or selling veggie burritos. My first thought is that he's posing, trying to be cool. But who am I to say, the shirt is distinctive and probably cliche at this point in time. 


Justin Timberlake is a deadhead. You know what they say, you're a deadhead when you say you are.

Next weeks' Stream

The theme for the month of July: the Dead in the South. The featured show for this week's Shakedown Stream will once again emanate from North Carolina. This spring '81 show is the 1st show after their recent foray in England for a mini tour and it is also the 1st show of an east coast spring tour. The time period will always have a special place in my psychadelic cellular memory because it is truly when I got on the bus. North Carolina also has a special relationship with the Grateful Dead. Stream in and find out what why.

FURTHUR - At a Siding -Terrapin Flyer

Phil & Bobby are taking Furthur further as we can witness in this video clip.  The Grateful Dead never played the full Terrapin Station as it appears on the Terrapin Station album. Bob Weir's Ratdog did and I suspect they were the first. On Memorial Day weekend, Furthur broke out the complete Terrapin Station as well as the other songs from the album. Check them out jamming one of great Dead songs. Henceforth, look for more video clips on Shakedown Stream Blog. 

Chet Helms

Chet Helms, a towering figure in the 1960s Bay Area music scene who brought Janis Joplin to San Francisco and ran the Avalon Ballroom during the Summer of Love, died early Saturday after suffering a stroke last week. He was 62. "Chet Helms was like one of the founding fathers of music scene here," said Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead and many other bands. "He was really the heart and soul of the music scene here in San Francisco. He was more than just a promoter. The Avalon really captured the spirit and the vibe of the era."

Furthur in July 6th

We Will Get By - We Will Survive 
The thematic focus for Shakedown Stream this July will present shows from the South. This week's Charlotte, North Carolina show offers lots of sweet nuggets from the Grateful Dead. The 1st hour opens up with solid "Touch of Grey" from the following night. "The Vicitm or the Crime" is by request and The Baby Blue is quite hissy, but crusty enough. Then I showcase some tunes from Furthur in Lowell, Mass and, even more excitingly, Phil's new Robert Hunter song "Colors of the Rain." Next week, stay tuned for Bobby's new Hunter song.
