For Sale: Jerry Garcia's House

Located up in rural Marin County, this palatial estate in Nicasio is asking just shy of $4 million dollars. The home, which sits on 11 acres and has 300 degree views of Mt. Tam and out to the Berkeley skyline, was the last place Jerry owned before his passing in 1995. The current owner is noted on the listing as having close ties with the remaining members of the band and
"...has discovered many interesting stories that surround the time Jerry lived here."

Jerry Garcia - 15 years ago ...

On August 9, 1995, at 4:23 AM, Garcia's body was discovered in his room at the rehabilitation clinic. The cause of death was a heart attack. Garcia had long struggled with drug addiction, weight problems, and sleep apnea, all of which contributed to his physical decline. Phil Lesh remarked in his autobiography that, upon hearing of Garcia's death, "I was struck numb; I had lost my oldest surviving friend, my brother."
On the morning of August 10, Garcia was rested at a funeral home in San Rafael, California. On August 12, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Belvedere, Garcia's funeral was held. It was attended by his family, the remaining Grateful Dead and their friends, including former basketball player Bill Walton and musician Bob Dylan, and his widow Deborah Koons, who barred Garcia's other two wives from the ceremony.
On August 13, a municipally-sanctioned public memorial took place in the Polo Fields of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and was attended by about twenty-five thousand people. The crowds produced hundreds of flowers, gifts, images, and even a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" in remembrance.
On April 4, 1996, Bob Weir and Deborah Koons spread half of Garcia's cremated ashes into the Ganges River at the holy city of Rishikesh, India, a site sacred to the Hindus. Then, according to Garcia's last wishes, the other half of his ashes were poured into the San Francisco Bay. Deborah Koons disallowed one of Garcia's ex-wives, Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Garcia, from attending the spreading of the ashes. (Wikipedia)

"Mountains Of The Moon" - Playboy After Dark

Yes, this is Jerry Garcia in a poncho playing guitar on a Hugh Hefner TV show from the 60s. There are various stories about this gig. One is that the boys dosed the other guests including Hugh with LSD. The other is that     the electronic equipment and the speakers on the stage behind the band are totally fake - they are props. I am not even sure if they are really performing this tune or lip synching it. Nonetheless, I find this stuff wicked interesting because it gives us a glimpse of american TV from the 60s as well as rare video coverage of a much younger Jerry Garcia.

Where are we going this week ...?

The fans selected 6/17/76 of Passaic, NJ as the featured show for this week. With over 100 votes cast on ShakedownStream's blog page, this show barely beat out the '74 show. Either way, we were going to have a an awesome featured show this week.

The month of March was devoted to the polling/voting theme. It was a cool way for Streamers to get involved and determine the direction of their show. Shakedown Stream is a Grateful Dead podcast show hosted by a fan for the fans. No one thing is greater than the other - just a piece of a larger whole.

Join me this week for another episode of Shakedown Stream on mvyradio.com this Tuesday at 5pm (eastern time).

Also, you may hear some old crusty Grateful Dead, Pig Pen, something acoustic, tracks from the recent Furthur tour '10 and whatever else that may flow into the Stream.

Peace, Jer Bear

Jerry Garcia: Our Favorite Santa

Jer,
Jerry sure was (and is) a great door-greeter. Thanks for the reply, and thank YOU for the stream. It's a tasty treat every week, and it was easily my favorite discovery of 2009, as I began
listening in July. Shakedown Stream has kicked me right in the the seat of my well-worn pants of Grateful Dead enthusiasm. I'm listening to the music more regularly than I have in years, and your comments are always good for a thought or a laugh.

I told a bunch of my friends about your Peggy-O image a few weeks back -- of Jerry as a storyteller with butterflies coming out of his
beard while we all gather 'round and listen. We could all relate to that one - scary!!! I also really enjoyed the Oxford, Maine stream that you did. I was up there for those terrific shows, and the beautiful weather and cool scene helped to provide one of my best GD memories ever. The memories came flooding back when listening to that stream.

December is indeed the month of giving, but Shakedown Stream gives every
week of the gaul-dern year!!!! I can't thank you enough.

The Music Never Stops!!!!!
Thanks again,
--Sean

Jerry Garcia Tribute

Jerry Garcia was born August 1, 1942 and died on August 9, 1995. Every August I create a special show devoted to Garcia's music. Deadheads, radio stations, and podcasters across the nation celebrate Mr. Garcia in myriad ways. Somewhere, someone is eating a pint of Cherry Garcia ice cream wearing a Jerry Garcia tie, watching the Grateful Dead movie.

This week, Shakedown Stream is devoted to the music of Jerry Garcia.

Coming Coming Coming Coming ARouNd

It seems like a good a time as any to bring this Blog page back around. So here it goes, after a hiatus from maintaining this Shakedown ...
